house of the very island 2009 A/W SEASON THEME 『 SYNCOPATION / A (x+13 / y-17) 』

Exploring a look that does not give in to some duality of sexes, the upcoming a/w collection continues to translate our interest for the geometric elements of patterndrawing into casual, wearable all-sex pieces.
Based on prime numbers, we laid down a set of rules to determine which parts and lines of the patterns should stay in place and which elements could be shifted. Unlike for the s/s collection 09, which focused on t-shirts, this time we also explored classical men´s cuts from the 50ies and 60ies, using them for t-shirts, shirts and jackets.

As in our previous collections, materials were chosen from an ecological point of view: we use organic cotton, soja/bamboo/cotton, hemp, hemp blends w recycled polyester , wool ... Continuing the idea of our collection "infinite prime", some of the shirts were handpainted using plant dyes. Main colours are black, blue, olive, off-white.

Inspiration:
Main inspiration for "Syncopation / A (x+13/y-17)" were photos taken by "william claxton" who was portraying jazz musicians from the 40ies to the 60ies (chet baker, charlie parker,....) as well as the idea of an accelerator (cern), "transmitting" clothing and shifting it "strangely".
Like in jazz music, dealing with interpretation and redrafts, disassembling formal restraints and presettings, "everyday-hybrids" are developed, consisting of strictness and slackness, familiar and distorted, understatement and experiment ending up in an "all-sexes avantgarde casual look".

Designer

karin krapfenbauer lives and works in vienna studied comperative literature and fashion.
markus hausleitner lives and works in vienna studied fashion and hosts several micro-clubbings and curates exhibitions with upcoming artists.
they met while studying at the university of applied arts in vienna (teachers: viktor & rolf raf simons) and started working together after graduating.

About the Label

The label house of the very island’s club division middlesex klassenkampf but the question is where are you now? was founded in 2006.

House of the very island’s started out as a cooperation of four designers rooted in a network of underground artists musicians and film-makers in Vienna. A therefore widely influenced notion of clothing defined the label´s work all collections including short films presented along with them.
Since 2008 Karin Krapfenbauer and Markus Hausleitner work as a team focusing explicitely on fashion.


Heading for an all sexes avant-garde casual wear House of combines effortless wearability with conceptual patternmaking and explicit silhouettes. Mathematical operations are used to make classic patterns into complex witty and highly individual clothes.
Another key aspect is the use of ecological and fair trade materials. The focus on sustainability and socially fair modes of production is not only due to political convictions but it is first of all an aesthetic choice and a decision for high quality standards. The sensual quality of hand woven textures the liveliness of plant colours and the wearing charecteristics of organic materials are an essential part of the looks.

The question marking the end of the label’s name should be read as a constant appeal reminding us that fashion is not a closed entity but a vital part of social political and cultural discourses.
